It’s telling, then, that only the dual-core Athlon IIe series of processors are clocked very high none of the X3 or X4 ‘e’ CPUs have a frequency above 2.3GHz. As we said earlier, the Athlon II X2 chips were built from the ground up to be dual-core processors, so they inherently tend toward better power efficiency than triple- and quad-core parts. Today we’ll be taking a look at the Athlon II X3 435, a highly-clocked triple-core chip, and the Athlon II X2 240e, a dual-core chip designed to better utilize energy. The 45W chips manage to undercut the TDP of some of the Core 2 Duos by twenty watts, but

The new X2 and X3 chips are clearly going to go up against Intel’s Pentium Dual-Core CPUs as well as some of the lower-priced Core 2 Duos. Once again, AMD is targeting the budget and mainstream segments of the marke. AMD showcased the overall energy efficiency of the new Athlon II CPUs today by releasing a number of processors with the ‘e’ designation, for their lower thermal design power. As a result, the dual-core Athlon II chips enjoy greater energy efficiency than their high-performance counterparts. The triple-core is a quad-core with a one core disabled, though.

Unlike the dual-core Phenom II processors, however, the Athlon II dual-cores are based on a native two core design, rather than actually being quad-core processor that just have half of their silicon disabled.
